Diamond Ring Buying Guide

A short, practical guide to buying a diamond ring online, whether it’s a diamond engagement ring, a wedding band, or a men’s diamond ring.

Check the 4 Cs

Carat (size), Cut (how well it’s shaped and faceted), Color (how close to colorless), and Clarity (how few internal flaws) determine both a diamond’s appearance and its price. A well-cut diamond with slightly lower color or clarity grades often looks better — and costs less — than a poorly cut diamond with perfect grades.

Natural, lab-grown, or moissanite

If a listing says “diamond” without qualification, it should be a natural mined diamond. “Lab-grown diamond” or “IGI certified lab-grown” means a real diamond grown in a lab rather than mined from the earth — same material, lower price. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are diamond simulants, not diamonds, even though some listings market them alongside diamond jewelry — always check the stone type before buying.

Getting the ring size right

Ring size can shift slightly with temperature and time of day. If you’re buying for someone else, borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and measure its inner diameter, or use a printable ring sizer, rather than guessing.

Metal choice

14K gold balances durability and price for everyday wear. 18K gold is softer and more valuable but shows wear faster. 10K gold is the most durable and affordable but has the lowest pure-gold content. Sterling silver is the most affordable option but requires more frequent polishing to prevent tarnish.

Caring for a diamond ring

Diamonds attract oil and lotion, which dulls their sparkle over time. A soak in warm water with a drop of dish soap, a soft brush, and a microfiber polishing cloth restores most of the shine between professional cleanings.
